in the mid-1970s Prof. Rabie served as a board member of the Palestine National Fund, the Arab Fund for Technical Assistance for African Countries, and the steering committee of the Euro-Arab Dialogue. Between 1972 and 1976, he was the founding editor of the Social Sciences Quarterly published by Kuwait University, and in 1984 he was the founding executive director of the Palestine Student Fund; Between 1983 and 1985 he was the executive director of the Institute of Palestinian Studies. Currently, Prof. Rabie is a fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung, a member of the Arab Thought Forum, the American Sociological Association, the Authors Guild, and a few other associations. Between 1989 and 1992, he was a member of the Harvard University team and the Brookings Institution working group to advance peace and economic development in the Middle East; and a board member of the Search for Common Ground Middle East Initiative. In 1985, he predicted the collapse of the Soviet Union; and in 1988, he conceived the idea of the US-PLO dialogue and coordinated the secret contacts that led the US to recognize the PLO and open a dialogue with it.
